As you can see, the author’s inference that advertising creates young drinkers is drawn from four (or, as we’ll see, really five) evidence-claims. In addition, one of these (‘By the 1980s, the picture was exactly the opposite.’) requires an assumed additional piece of evidence – advertising was targeting the 18–24 age group in the 1980s.

But are any of the evidence-claims relevant? Let’s look at the fourth. It is, in effect, two claims: alcohol advertising went up by x during 1992–2000; alcohol consumption by 11–15 year olds went up by x during the same time. The two claims are seen as acting together but, in acting together, they are being used as an independent evidence-claim (thus not dependent for their significance on any of the others). So is this claim relevant to the inference?
